Pitch or plastic-lined barrels, certainly minimal flavour impacts. Non-lined barrels, however, depart all sorts of disgusting effects on beer: Bourbon, whisky, wine, rum, sherry, plain oak...

Still though, there is a difference between Schlenkerla vom Holzfass and from keg. Never been able to compare them directly, mind you.
