T-Mobile claims that I am entitled to get "4G LTE" data free abroad.  LTE does not mean anything as a term by itself ("Long Term Evolution"), and "4G LTE" does not always mean 4G, but simply means "better than 3G".

In Europe with my iPhone, I would rarely get 4G.  I would get 3G or even slower "E" ("Edge", slower than 3G).  This was a consequence of which provider I was connected to, and how strong the signal was.  As you said, some of those massive stone buildings cannot get a good signal inside.
