A Great Dane dog is called a "German mastiff" in German, eine deutsche Dogge. Doubly complicated because Hund (dog) is masculine, but Dogge (mastiff) is feminine. I know owners of female dogs (bitches) who refer to their pets as "him" because Hund is masculine, even though there's also the feminine "Hündin" for female dogs. And yet they'll refer to their big male mastiff as "her" because Dogge is feminine.

(I can't recall if I learnt it's actually a German breed (not a Danish one) before I moved here or not.)
