| Words of wisdom, as usual, Andy! Probably like yourself, I was brought up in era where the only pub grub was a packet of plain crisps and maybe some salted peanuts. As a result, I still regards pubs as a place for drinking and prefer to do my eating at home. Of course, usually by force of circumstances, I have taken sustenance in plenty of pubs, stub'n, etc but, as I find that quantities of beer and food together don't suit my digestion, I try to avoid the habit. I know that pubs in Germany have developed over centuries in the fashion of 'taverns', providing a range of hospitality (food, drink, accommodation) but I still prefer the bar type, thus really feeling at home in the Schwemm at Schenkerla, Faessla, etc. My mind has wandered towards another great subject for debate in recent days, off-flavours in beers, such as diacetyl, and wonder how much that has been influenced by partaking of food and drink together. Just a thought! |
