Bamberg Tourist Office Offers Self Guided Tours

The Bamberg Tourist office (Geyserwörthstr. 3, www.bamberg.info) has started a new program of self guided beer tours of Bamberg. While it is primarily directed to "non beer-geeks," it is of interest to all who love good beer.

The program takes two forms:

First, for €3 you can purchase a 35 page pamphlet with descriptions of all the breweries and a "Sensory Profile" of one of their beers. Also included are some pretty good maps of the Bamberg area with the walking tour (and the breweries) clearly marked.

The other option costs €20 and includes the booklet, a 25cl glass mug printed with the names and logos of the 9 Bamberg breweries (the same glass that is used for the annual Tag des Deutschen Bieres celebration) and nice backpack with the Bamberg "Man on a Horse" logo and coupons good for 5 beers.

With the latter option you must choose either the Left Bank of the Regnitz (Schlenkerla, Klosterbräu, Greifenklau and Kaiserdom) or the Right Bank (Spezial, Fässla, Keesmann, Mahrs and Maisel).

You get one beer at each (you can't drink 5 at one brewery) except if you choose the Left Bank you get a "free ticket" as there are only 4 breweries on that side. (Somebody should open a new one to balance things out)

Currently the pamphlet is available only in German, but an English translation is in the works, so check with the tourist office. Even if you don't read any German, I think it makes a great souvenir
