The Breweries of Bamberg
The three breweries left are Greifenklau, Maisel and Kaiserdom. The are bit on the outskirts of town and take a little planning and effort to reach. Brauerei Greifenklau sits on top of hill on the Laurenziplatz (Number 20). The easiest way to get there is to take any of Bus Line number 8, 12 or 18 from the downtown ZOB (central bus station). They all stop at Laurenziplatz.
Greifenklau (which translates as "Griffin's Claw") has only one year round beer, named simply "Lagerbier." [Note: They have since introduced a Wheat and a Pils] I have heard tell that they use a small portion of smoked malt, but I have never been able to taste it. In November they (like all of the Bamberg breweries) serve a Bockbier and also a Festbier during the Christmas season. The inside restaurant and pub is nice, but not all different from many other is town. However, if the weather is nice, they open up a large biergarten in the back. It is nicely shaded with trees and has a great view. It is especially nice if you have walked up the hill. They are open every day, but close early (2pm) on Sundays.
The final brewery in Bamberg is actually the largest. Privatbrauerei Kaiserdom (Breitäckerstrasse 9, 96049 Bamberg ) brews over 250,000 hectoliters (180,000 US bbl) a year, over four times the next largest, Maisel. However most of this is for export. In fact many of the locals were surprised to learn of a Kaiserdom Rauchbier, because it is not sold in Germany (it turns out it is not actually brewed by them, but by Schlenkerla!). They also brew a nonalcoholic beer with an Arabic languagelabel. There is no picture of Kaiserdom on this page, because to be honest, I have never been to the brewery or the attached restaurant and pub (around the corner at Gaustadter Hauptstrasse 26). While the beers are well made, I did not find them interesting enough to make the trek to the brewery. You can taste the beer at many pubs in town If you do decide to make the trip, Bus Lines 6, 16 and 26 all go to the suburb of Gaustadt where the brewery is located.
